To be successful in dealing with global challenges, a proactive, anticipative approach is critical. It is difficult to imagine without the organization’s commitment to a “future preparedness” that involves continuous systematic exploration of its future environment, and building of capacities to meet coming challenges.

“The lack of a systematic, organization-wide approach to future preparedness is one of the greatest hurdles that prevent organizations from adopting a more proactive strategic posture.”

“If you are unable to correctly predict the next force that’s coming towards you or the force that would carry you, then you will be overwhelmed,” says Lee Kuan Yew, who spearheaded Singapore’s growth. According to him, organizations, to be successful in the future must develop “a very sensitive antenna and a good radar.”
But how good are the “antennas and radars” of enterprises? How satisfied are business leaders with their ways of “future preparedness”? Currently leaders find themselves in a position of the person driving at night with headlights switched off. They see a rearview mirror and a dashboard, but not the road ahead. Companies need to make sure that their lights are always on, and that they have a GPS system to navigate the maze of turns on the way to a desirable destination.
