Scenario Thinking

Scenario thinking is a process that helps to build a strategy to deal with uncertain future environment. According to a popular definition, “scenarios are carefully crafted stories about the future embodying a wide variety of ideas and integrating them in a way that is communicable and useful.

Scenarios help us link the uncertainties we hold about the future to the decisions we must make today” (Royal Dutch Shell).

The Future Map is designed to link Scenario Planning process to core strategy and measurement processes of an enterprise and provide a framework for visualizing and tracking scenarios.

The role of the Future Map in supporting scenario thinking is described in detail in the book “Scenarios for Success” (John Wiley & Sons, 12 Oct 2007, ISBN-10: 0470512989 ) in the chapter “Building Corporate Future Management Systems: the Future Map Approach” written by Don Heathfield.
